Senate Republicans are working to distance themselves from growing tension within their MAGA-aligned base over claims that the Trump administration is withholding key information related to Jeffrey Epstein and his alleged network of “clients.”
President Trump now faces one of his most vocal backlashes yet from typically loyal figures, including former national security adviser Michael Flynn and conservative activist Laura Loomer.
Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel are under fire from MAGA activists demanding more details about high-profile individuals allegedly linked to Epstein’s trafficking activities. However, a Justice Department and FBI memo recently concluded there is no incriminating “client list.”
Republican lawmakers are steering clear of the issue as they contend with Democratic attacks on Trump’s new tariffs and Medicaid spending cuts, which passed into law this month alongside major tax relief and increased funding for border security.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters: “I’ll leave that up to DOJ and the FBI. I think that’s in their purview. The president’s expressed his views, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Trump defended Bondi over the weekend after activists criticized her at a Turning Point USA event in Tampa, Florida. “For years, it’s Epstein, over and over again,” Trump posted on Truth Social, blaming Democrats for the continued focus.
Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley expressed cautious support for Bondi’s handling of Epstein documents. “What I know now, yes,” Grassley said when asked if she had been transparent enough. He added: “With anything in government, I always urge the greatest transparency.”
Meanwhile, activists seized on Bondi’s February comment that Epstein’s files were “sitting on her desk.” DOJ and FBI clarified last week that much of the material remains sealed under court orders and dismissed claims of Epstein blackmailing elites.
Republican strategist Brian Darling warned that dismissing the controversy outright is not sustainable. “The administration will need to provide more information. Saying ‘everything’s out there’ isn’t working and won’t resonate with the base,” he said.
A Trump-aligned strategist suggested the administration may soon offer a limited concession to calm MAGA activists. “They’re likely to release as little as possible due to legal complications,” the strategist said.
Loomer warned that the lack of transparency could cost Republicans seats in Congress. Lara Trump indicated in an interview that the administration is preparing to release more Epstein-related information, stating: “They hear it and understand it.”
Senator Marsha Blackburn reiterated her commitment to exposing Epstein’s associates. “I remain committed to breaking apart trafficking rings and hope to uncover more information from financial records to lock up vile criminals,” she posted on social media.
Trump has expressed frustration with the issue’s persistence. At a recent cabinet meeting, he remarked: “Are people still talking about this guy, this creep? That is unbelievable.”
Still, mounting pressure from activists and strategists suggests the controversy is far from over.
